Net Neutrality Policy Causes Uproar amongst Mobile Broadband Providers in the US

November 8th, 2009

Mobile broadband providers in the US do not seem very excited about the FCC’s net neutrality policies. According to this policy, wireless broadband providers will face the same regulations that are followed to keep wired broadband providers in check.

New FCC chairman Julius Genachowski has refreshed public memory by proposing to formalize the same policies that were introduced four years ago to curb the ISPs’ influence over the content and services of their networks. However, most mobile broadband providers had no idea that it was going to be applicable to them as well, and so they have come out to oppose it openly.

The main intent behind the formulation of these principles was to allow users to access any kind of application or content through any type of a device, and to prolong the healthy competitive relationship between different service providers.

However, this new move of formalizing the principles is being seen as the biggest thing to hit America in recent times. Although the negative consequences of this move are not deliberately intended, it will definitely kill the competitive edge in the market and will reduce the inflow of originality as well as investment in the sector. Moreover, too much of control by the management will choke the providers and cause them to fail in getting the best out of the available spectrum.
