Survival Strategies for Large Hold ‘Em Tournies
December 18th, 2009Online poker tournaments can vary in size from single table to huge contests with hundreds, even thousands, of participants. Huge tournaments are often tough to survive because there will often be many online players who tend to bring more aggressive play to the table.
It is imperative to build up your chip stack early to fend off aggressive online poker players. You must be willing to take a few risks right away. Aggressive players often over-value and over-bet their hands. You may be holding the best hand on the flop, but still have to worry about the aggressive player raising to a draw. There will be some bad beats when you have pursued the right action, which is why you have to build up a chip stack right from the start.
Playing poker online is good practice for large field tournaments. There are many that will have thousands of entries. With low buy-ins, you can gain experience executing aggressive play early in the tournament. Certainly, you will bust out early in some, but then in others, you will acquire a strong chip stack that you can wield against your opponents.
Look for large-field tournies with low buy-ins and then proactively play an aggressive style. It will help you become more comfortable using the same strategy at live tournament tables.
