Manchester May Soon Be Home to New Whitehall
December 21st, 2009Manchester may soon be the location of a civil service hub if governmental plans go through according to expectations. The plans have already been outlined and are due to be presented shortly. The hub is being called the ‘Whitehall of the north’. The government has long been promising to move some civil service positions out of London. However, this plan has not seen fruition as yet. If these plans do materialise in accordance with the scheme outlined then a huge official complex could develop at the abandoned Mayfield Railway Station, near Piccadilly in Manchester. The entire landscape of Manchester could undergo a major transformation with this and the real estate markets here could benefit tremendously with the additional attention this would draw here. The proposed campus will contain many desk space rental buildings with a park in the centre. The inner ring road will be extended to facilitate this project and the Mayfield Railway Station will receive a new lease of life with operations commencing once more. With the new developments it is believed that more employment opportunities will be generated here. Most of the civil servants here will be coming from across the Great Manchester area. Speaking about these developments, the Regional Minister, Phil Woolas has expressed happiness that this are has been chosen for the hugely important scheme. He has said that as the government hopes to relocate some 24000 civil servants to locations out of London, this huge area will be an ideal business relocation point for them. Manchester real estate market will benefit greatly by this plan, he said. Earlier this year, the government had asked for plans to renovate and develop this area and reopen Mayfield Railway Station for operations.
