New Browser Options for Windows Users

March 11th, 2010

An official agreement between Microsoft and the European Competition Commission 2009 has given millions of internet users in Europe the chance to switch to different browsers. This option will be available from the first day in March.

Initially, Microsoft Internet Explorer was the only browser for those computers that had Windows as their operating system. However with the signing of the new agreement users will be able to choose the web browser of their choice. Some of the popular browsers that users can choose from are Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera.

All computers that use Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 will get automatic software updates that will enable them to change their browsers.

Statistically, more than half of the active internet users in the world use Internet Explorer as their web browser. However with the recent change these figures are likely to change very significantly as users across Europe will now be able to choose the browser that they are comfortable using.

Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC’s correspondent who works on current technology reports that millions of users worldwide who never had to make a choice with regards to the browser will now be in a fix about the choice at hand. This is a huge marketing opportunity for all Microsoft’s competitors.

Microsoft has taken the initiative to show their users what the screen shots of the update will look like. They have updated their blogs to help people make their choice. After the users make their choice of browser, a shortcut of the icon will be placed on the desktop automatically.
