How to Write a Television Pilot

For every great television pilot that launches a successful show, there are dozens or hundreds of duds that never make it or at best limp out of the gate. If you are interested in writing a pilot for you own TV show, you want to learn from the successes and mistakes from others in order to maximize your chances of success. Here are some basic guidelines for writing a winning television pilot:

First, you need to craft the general idea for the show. When and where does it take place? Who are the main characters? What is their context? You’ll also need to spend time crafting out the back stories for your characters.

Next, decide the basic plot, or arc, for the show in the first episode and beyond. You want the pilot to indicate where the show is going in the future, so you’ll need to know the answer to that yourself.

Now that the show has been sketched out, you need to get to work on the script. Begin sketching out the main outline of the pilot’s plot. The structure of your episode will depend on how long it is – 30 minutes (actually around 22 without commercials) or 60 (44 without commercials). You’ll need to craft the action for each ‘act’ within the show – 30 minute shows usually have three, 60 minute shows 5 to 6.

Next, sit down and craft the dialog and action. You’ll want to focus on character development so the audience will have someone to connect with.

Once you’ve written the pilot, give it out to trusted friends and mentors for feedback. Be ready to rewrite and revise – this is perhaps the most important phase of the project, because your ideas will need time to mature and develop as you and others look over the final product.
